Float Versus Lead

Gruff and I popped down to Marsh Farm today and had five hours or so on the bank. The day did not get off to a good start as half way down the A3 a little voice went"Oh fook I've left me bastard reel at home"They do say with age comes wisdom, you could also say once you reach your sixtieth year, senility kicks in pretty dam quick. No major drama though as I always carry two reels,so Gruff had a loan of one of my pins.

I had been looking forward to it all week,I like the place.A friend fished Richardsons lake in the week and had a dozen Tench. He did warn me that all the fish caught,by him and other anglers were caught at distance on the lead,so leave your poxy twig rods at home and lump some bait in.Did I listen?Na!

We both fished or should I say blanked on Harris Lake today.Me in peg 26 on the far bank,Gruff in 27.Most anglers today were on Richardsons and I could here bite alarms going off on a regular basis. Now the peg I fished here.

I have caught well in this swim before, just off the edge of the Lily Pads about a rod length out.Today one bite at around ten o'clock then not a touch.Corn,Worm,Meat and soft hooker pellets.OK I tried further out but the gusty wind made float fishing awkward.A lad two pegs down from me had not had a bite on the float by the time we departed.

In fact the only fish I saw caught were two Tench to a guy just up from us,who was ledgering with an opened end feeder and hair rigged halibut pellets. Was it the bright sunlight that kept the fish further out,I'm not sure.I just love to float fish, the dips and sways are like a samba beat in my soul(did I really just write that, wanker). On small venues surely the float should rule the roost,or perhaps I should adapt more and return and spod the granny out of it.

When I walked around the lakes, hardly anyone was float fishing. Most guys had a two rod set ups.I think the time has come for me to burn my twigs on the fire.Real tree up and return with gusto.I can't believe I've got the front to post up a blank in relation to Marsh Farm.I have never, ever blanked here until today.

Welcome to the old mans club the Bard of Bridgenorth.

While pursuing FATWA,at work this week I came upon this semi rant(though he denies it is a rant) from the above. Now the Bard has reached a seminal moment in his life, yes he is over forty, not stone I hasten to add.But I think he is now ready for the order of the Pipe and Slippers.Steve may I welcome you into the fold old son.Being grumpy and oldish myself,I feel now is the right time to get down to pound land and sort out the above. You know it makes sense.

Its all about personal choice as far as I'm concerned.
Be that alarms, center pins, bivvies or anything else.....

I get a bit fed up of people 'telling' me I can't do this or I shouldn't do that....

I'll do what every I like....
I'm old enough and been fishing long enough to make my own mind up about how, where and when I fish.

Doppelgangers of the Angling World Part XXIII

I've not had one of these for a couple of months now and this one was sent into the Yat phone,on Tuesday from my west country correspondent.

Here we have that all time favorite character from the legendary 1980's film the Goonies, yes it be Sloth. Here we see Sloth with a pencil drawing done by his daughter with a new PB Perch that weighed in,at I think 4lbs 8oz.Two things though, how on earth did Sloth manage to beguile someone enough to make baby's?And secondly how does he manage to hold a rod long enough to fish,in between eating candy bars?

And below with have the angler known as Barbelist,or in real terms Paul Thomas looking I must say, rather dashing.

My copy of Pikelines landed on the door mat yesterday and I spent last night reading through this.Much better call I thought, than watching Benfica and Chelsea. The summer issue shone the light on Pike fishing in Ireland. The PAC magazine has various themes to most issues. We have had a focus on Scotland, with a cracking article by Craig Renwick, who has caught some extraordinary large fish, for one so young,he pulled no punches too, good to see.Issues on River Pike Fishing,Fly Fishing for Pike have also graced various issues. The current issues best article was written by Chris Bishop, entitled Building Bridges concerning a fish-in with the Polish Anglers Association.Like it or not anglers from Eastern Europe are hear to stay.So surely a directive like this is the way forward, educate, make friends, learn new ways to fish etc.As opposed to xenophobic like rants on internet forums? Keep up the good work chaps.

I had to laugh at this.On the way back from a meeting today I came upon this parked up in Charles Street. It seems the lady who done is not very happy at all.If you google the names, you will find out a lot more of what has been going on.A tip, make sure your ex-wife does not have a spare key to your vehicle.

Lastly Will Golightly may and I say may, have been up to his old tricks again.A thread over on Fatwa today was pulled about an E-bay scammer.What ever next?I reckon Steve "Small Hands" Pope was only to glad to see the back of this chap.Eh Steve ;-0

Guesting Yes or No?

I met a mate at lunchtime today for a cupla pints,no fishing for me this weekend as work this past week has been manic.I fancied a lie in today and a feet up kind of day.But prior to meeting him I took a stroll around a small section of river that is out of bounds to anglers, the signs nailed up told me this!

It's not club controlled,as most of this river has free fishing along the majority of its length.I used to fish this river a few times a week,in the evenings mostly around five years ago, with some nice fish gracing my net.But the sheer volume of human dumped rubbish that adorn the banks, put paid to that.I simply can't abide fishing surrounded by shite, regardless of what the river holds.

Now I have been known to guest on National Trust land, where angling was prohibited in my younger days.Creeping underneath a fence as dusk fell and enjoying a few undisturbed hours, before slinking away again like a thief in the night. But is it OK to do it the wrong side of forty years young?I'll also add that I would never guest on a water that is syndicated or club controlled,as to me that is wrong. But what harm would I be doing, having a few hours at dusk in the summer.I took a few photos and spotted the normal signs that an angler, other than Kingfishers and Herons had trod the banks.Tell tale rod rest holes in the earth, worn down bank side etc. As ever I suppose the devil in me,will out and talk far louder in my head than the good side.Remember the scene from the film Animal House, you know the one,the devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, that is me on a daily basis, excluding the naked, drunk cheerleader chick.

Looks Fishy To Me

I like to read as most of us do,this book may be of interest to those who like to read about the history of our great country,or is that once great. It's know wonder most of the planet shows an immense dislike for us.We have "rucked" our way around the globe for eons.

Their are currently 193 country's that are UN member states. We have invaded or fought conflicts with around 171 of these. We have invaded Ethiopia arriving on elephants,we picked on the poor old Philippines in the eighteenth century and occupied Manila.

In short we have tried it on from A to Z over the years.Trying to install some of our values and beliefs in to these lesser nations. And what thanks do we get?Very little by the looks of things,I think the world is just jealous of us to be truthful. As they all want to be British, not me though I'm English and proud of that fact. It's a decent old read in my opinion,it taught me things I was not aware of,as normally I'm just fuck as fick.

Football now and not about Sir Alex Ferguson!Have the press not gone overboard though in this past week.Every paper had a supplementary pull out on the cantankerous old sod,you would have thought he had passed away, not just deciding that he was ready for his pipe and slippers.

No the legendary Alfredo Di Stefano who is 86(looking good my man looking goooodddd),is set to marry Gina Gonzalez a Costa Rican television reporter aged 36.Now Alfredo's three children are up in arms over this. Not once have his three loving offspring, mentioned the real reason why they wish to contest this most romantic of unions.MONEY!I think they should just be happy for the old boy.You only have to look at this photo to see a lady who is in know way a gold digger.Alfredo from high up on Yat Rock,I wish you well my old son.Get in their you lucky bastard.

FA Cup final later on today, looking forward to it?Na me neither.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Be Lucky.

Four Seasons

That was the weather today, after the last few days of balmy temperatures.Yesterday evening I was mowing the lawn in a pair of shorts.Today it was a stiff breeze, hail, rain and some weak sunshine.I popped down to a small club lake for a few hours float fishing that opened in the week.

Mother Nature is well behind her normal spring colours this year. These Lilly pads should  have a vibrant green tinge,as opposed to this rather lack luster brown hue.Still I had the pool to myself so I set about to do some fishing. The first hour or so I fished corn on the hook and missed a succession of lighting bites.Small Roach I think were the culprit.

I then changed tack and fished meat, lift method stylie. It worked a treat I managed five small Carp and three Bream.Just fun fishing really on light tackle with the Carp giving a good account of themselves, the Bream well they just do that Bream thing.Shame about the mouth damage on the Carp though.I wonder how that happens?Maybe, just maybe it's the haul 'em in merchants that some time appear.Nice four hours though, but I would have loved some on my bones.

Oh dear poor Wolves.Three years ago my mate Rich Frampton posted on the BS forum within minutes of my lot getting relegated.Having a good old chortle! But these last three years I have been awaiting my time to come back. But to have back to back relegation's takes some real panache Rich.I now hope your club plummets even faster than Gabriel,on your route to damnation or Non League football what ever floats your boat.

Still with football.Brentford and Doncaster Rovers last weekend.I tried to explain to Lady D,that it could not have been scripted by anyone in Hollywood. It will be one of those games in years to come when every "Donnie" fan, claims to have been at the game.I'd be gutted if I missed that.

Lastly this.A client of mine was in Holland last weekend,to see some paintings toshed up by a gezzer who cut off his ear.You can keep your Sunflowers, this really for some reason has always been my favorite. What draws me to it,time and time again I will never know.Cue "starry, starry night, paint your palate blue and grey".

"Boots"

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, the weather looks set to be luvvveeerrrly in the South East.

Be Lucky.
